CALPlex Frequently Asked Questions

- The new CALPlex will require CALSoft 6 to operate. The older versions of CALSoft (prior to CALSoft 6) are not able to work with the new CALPlex:
- CALSoft 6 users: If you already have CALSoft 6, you will need to download/install an update (free) so CALSoft 6 can communicate with the new CALPlex. Other than that, nothing changes for existing CALSoft 6 users. (instructions on how to install update will be provided along with CALPlex).
- Older Versions of CALSoft: If you purchased a new CALPlex but have an older version of CALSoft (before CALSoft 5), we are offering a limited time 20% discount to upgrade to CALSoft 6. (Discount valid through October 1, 2026). Contact TechniCAL for more information.

- Is the new CALPlex Wireless or Bluetooth?
- No. The new CALPlex connects to your computer with a USB cable. The CALPlex has a USB-C connection port. We provide a USB A to C cable with the CALPlex.
- Does CALPlex require a battery?
- The new CALPlex has two small lithium batteries inside that allow for the unit to store data on-board in case you lose connection with your computer/CALSoft during a test.
- This battery is not required for CALPlex to operate with CALSoft as the CALPlex receives its power through the USB connection.
- Only TechniCAL can access or change the batteries in CALPlex. When the unit is sent in for calibration, we check the battery and replace it if necessary.
- What makes the new CALPlex different than the previous model?
- The new version has
- Improved waterproofing the enclosure has welded seams, and a gasket system where the thermocouple connectors plug into the unit.
- A smaller footprintdesigned to sit next to your laptop, taking up less space.
- Updated internal technology– the internal circuitry and communication has been updated to current-day standards, and more readily available parts/components
- More robust USB connectivity– solid connection and recognition by computer’s USB port
- Emergency data recovery feature – saves a backup copy of data on the CALPlex, enabling your team to retrieve backup data directly from the CALPlex unit in case of lost connection during the test.
- The new version has
- My thermocouple lead wires have water “wicking” out at the connectors, and this gets on my CALPlex. How can we stop that?
- It is common for water inside the retort to be forced through the overwrap sheathing of thermocouple wire. The pressure in the retort forces the water through the wire and it exits at the blue connectors that plug into the CALPlex. To prevent this..
- Slit the wire approximately 12″ away from the end where the blue connector is. This allows a relief for the water to drip out before it reaches the connectors. See this article for more…
- Use a set of short jumper wires that connected between the end of the lead wires and the CALPlex. This allows the water to drip out at the jumper connector, and not reach the CALPlex. Contact TechniCAL to purchase a set of jumper wires.
- New Improved Wire – We now offer thermocouple wire without the clear overwrap, eliminating the path for water to travel through the wire. This solution eliminates the water-wicking issue. Order a new set of wires with this new, improved no overwrap wire to replace your older set of wires.
