Splitting Lead Wires to Prevent CALPlex Water Damage

June 21, 2022

When testing with a wired data collection system in a water retort, there can sometimes be an issue where the pressure inside the retort forces water through the lead wire insulation. This water is forced through the length of the wire to the end of the subminiature connectors, which connect to the CALPlex datalogger. In some cases, this allows for water to get in/on the CALPlex and may affect the performance.

To eliminate this, TechniCAL recommends that you cut away the exterior insulation and “split” or separate the red and blue wires from each other to allow for a “break” in the wire insulation. This allows the water to exit the wires before it gets to the CALPlex.

Laid Out

** NOTE: Before doing this, please make sure to be very careful to only cut the clear insulation overwrap without cutting the red or blue insulation. If you cut the red or blue insulation, it will expose the metal wire and will result in erratic readings. **

Choose a location on the wire that will allow the water to drip out, but not affect your CALPlex. A safe location for the split can be about 6 inches away from the end of the wire (6 inches from where it is plugged into the datalogger). It should be in a position that is clear of the CALPlex outlets.

Once you’ve chosen your location, cut the clear outside insulation very gently so you can pull the red and blue wires apart.

Spreading

Pull the wires apart with your fingers. Once again, this provides an exit point for the water.

Do this for all of the wires that plug into the CALPlex.

Sliding on

NOTE: There may still be some water that makes it past the split, so we recommend that you “tilt” the CALPlex forward by raising the back of the unit.  This will help to further prevent any water at the connector from entering the CALPlex unit.
